Land clearing is shifting to avoid impacts on and by climate change

Climate change is all over the news.

Our world is changing, and it’s impacting how we’re able to do things, and making us more aware of how what we do impacts the planet.

In Texas, climate change is increasing the extreme amounts of precipitation and causing long dry periods with drought and soil erosion. Both factors can make land clearing jobs challenging, but not impossible.

How is the land clearing industry changing to avoid being impacted by climate change?

Traditional land clearing methods take a “slash and burn” approach.

This methodology of land clearing needs to be done when the brush is dry to ensure that everything burns properly.

At WEMULCH we prefer the mulching approach that involves cutting down the brush, making it into mulch, and then scattering the mulch on the ground. This form of land clearing does not rely primarily on weather conditions.

It’s also interesting to note that forestry mulching is an approach that won’t contribute to increased temperatures in the same ways that slashing and burning does.

How is forestry mulching a shift to avoid impacting climate change?

In the same ways that climate change can impact how land clearing PROs complete their jobs, land clearing can also impact climate change.

Through forestry mulching, land clearers can mitigate the risk of forest fires by clearing the underbrush as preventive measure are creating fire lanes. And this is not only in forestry for for residential properties as well. Removal of dead trees, overgrown bushes, and ladder fuels, while also creating a defensible space around your home immediately removes all hazardous fuel for a fire and adds beautiful space to your land.

As climate change continues to worsen, there is a greater risk for forest fires—especially in the Texas heat. Raising temperatures result in forests becoming dry, making them excellent kindling.

By clearing the land, and laying down dense mulch, land clearers are lessening the chances of a forest fire breaking out, while ensuring that the plot of land is preserved.

Lowering the risk of forest fires is an important step in protecting people, businesses, and wildlife.

Mulch also has the added benefit of having less of an impact on erosion and it decomposes into rich topsoil. Often, land clearing involves removing dense or dead brush that is preventing new growth from emerging.

By laying down mulch, we are creating a new bed of fresh nutrients that will enable native plants to sprout and flourish.

Why do we take climate change into consideration?

At WEMULCH, we always want to provide services that are helpful for our customers and PROs, but not at the cost of harming the planet.

We understand the impact that climate change is having on our planet, and our hope is that we can provide more sustainable options for land clearing services. Emissions from land use, largely agriculture, forestry and land clearing, make up some 22% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

It’s our goal to do our best, to ensure that we’re providing land clearing solutions that keep our planet in mind. We don’t want our actions to harm the climate, so we do what we can to lower our carbon footprint and complete our jobs with as low an impact as we can.

We are honored to provide land clearing services that take a more sustainable approach than traditional methods, and we are hopeful that our clients will recognize the research, time, and energy we put in to lowering our impact on climate change.

We understand the impact that climate change is having on our planet, and our hope is that we can provide more sustainable options for land clearing services.
